Whether you are studying the Romans, Normans, castles, Victorians, or the Home Front and World War II, you will find plenty to keep your pupils engrossed both whilst visiting Cardiff Castle and during preparation and follow-up work at school.
Cardiff Castle is a unique site with 2000 years of history. It was started in the 1st century AD by the Romans who built the original fort. In the 11th century, the Normans constructed the Keep that still dominates the Castle Green.
The medieval Lords of Glamorgan began work on the House during the 15th century, but it was the Bute family in the 19th century who transformed the House into the opulent Victorian Gothic home it is today.
During World War II the walls which surround the Castle were used as air raid shelters, a place of safety for thousands of Cardiff citizens. A reconstruction of the shelters is open for visitors to the Castle.
With such a variety of historical periods and its location in the centre of the capital city of Wales, a visit to Cardiff Castle offers an exciting and entertaining educational experience to groups of all ages and needs.

In August 2017, Cardiff Castle had the honour of being awarded a Sandford Award for Education by the Heritage Education Trust for the third time. This award recognises quality and excellence in the education services and facilities at historic sites all over Britain.
Cardiff Castle also holds a Quality Badge, awarded by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom.

EDUCATION CENTRE
The Education Centre is open all year during term time and is fully accessible. Activities can be adapted for students of all ages and abilities, with tactile collections available for visitors with visual impairments.
WORKSHOPS
To enhance our offer to schools, we have a range of special curricular-related activities for both primary and secondary schools. Most sessions last approximately an hour but can be shortened if required.
