WHEELCHAIR & MOBILITY ACCESS

  • Where possible we make provisions to ensure the site is accessible for wheelchair, mobility scooter and buggy users but please note the Castle Apartments and Norman Keep are not accessible by wheelchair or pushchair.
  • The Visitor Centre is fully accessible to wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs, including the Firing Line museum, café and shop. Disabled toilets are located on the first floor.
  • The Castle grounds are flat, with much of it laid to lawn. Just over the drawbridge at the Castle entrance, there is a cobblestone path running the length of the site.
  • The Education Centre and 15th century Undercroft, where the Welsh Banquets are held, are also accessible to wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs.

CONCESSIONARY TICKETS

  •  We offer a concessionary ticket for disabled visitors; in addition a single carer is allowed in for free with each disabled visitor.

TOILETS

  • Toilets for disabled visitors are located in the Visitor Centre, on the first floor, and are accessible by both lift and stairs.

PARKING

  • Our city centre location means we have very limited space for parking. However a small number of parking spaces are available on site for disabled visitors. These must be reserved in advance by calling our office on 02920 878 100. Directions will be provided once we have confirmed your space prior to your visit.

ASSISTANCE DOGS

  • Assistance dogs are allowed on site, other dogs and pets are not permitted.

ACCESSIBILITY GUIDE

Level Access
  • There is level access from the street to the main entrance.
  • There is level access from the main entrance to the ticket office, Visitor Centre, gift shop, cafe and the Castle Grounds.
  • In the Visitor Centre, a lift gives access between the ground floor, first floor and the roof terrace. From the terrace, there is level access around the Battlement Walks and a ramp leading down to the Castle Green.
Access with Steps

Norman Keep

  • Access to the interior of the Norman shell keep is via a steep climb of around 50 stone steps with a handrail. To reach the viewing platform at the top of the gate tower there is a further wooden staircase and a short stone spiral stairway. Please note that steps in the keep may be slippery during wet weather conditions.

Castle Apartments

  • There are 6 stone steps with a handrail up to the entrance of the House.  There are a further 5 stone steps inside to reach the Entrance Hall. On this floor it is possible to view the Library, the Study, the Drawing Room and the Small Dining Room. There are 25 carpeted steps to reach the next floor. On this floor it is possible to view the Arab Room and the Banqueting Hall.
Hearing
  • Our audio guide of the site includes a BSL sign-language tour.
Visual
  • We have an audio guide available in 10 different languages and include a tour for visually-impaired visitors (in both English and Welsh).
  • Large print script audio guides are also available.

General
  • Some staff have disability awareness training.
  • We have emergency evacuation procedures in place for disabled visitors.
